FAQs

Whether you're shipping products across the country or exporting them worldwide,  the quality of the carton seal will have an impact on the protection of the products. Using water-activated kraft paper tape will help in forming a permanent bond between the tape and the corrugated cardboard. This will provide superior packaging as compared to regular plastic tape. This article discusses how to seal cartons with kraft paper tape as well as the benefits of doing so.

How to Seal Cartons with Kraft Paper Tape (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Fold the Carton Flaps Properly

Before applying any tape, make sure the carton is assembled correctly. Even the strongest adhesive cannot compensate for poorly aligned flaps.

  • Correct Flap Sequence: Start by folding the two small flaps inward, then the two large flaps. The result will be a flat and even seam that allows the tape to make proper contact with the carton across the entire seam length.

  • Preventing Gaps:  Before applying the tape, examine the carton's seam. The flaps should fit together without any overlap or visible gaps. Gaps cause reduced contact between the tape and the carton seam, compromising the strength of the seal. Also, such gaps may allow the entry of dust, moisture, or other contaminants into the package when stored and transported. In case a carton is either too full or damaged, dispose of the carton rather than attempting to close it forcefully.

Step 2: Prepare the Tape

Once the carton is ready, prepare the kraft paper tape using equipment that matches your production volume.

  • Manual Dispenser: A manual dispenser of water-activated tape is a very useful and relatively inexpensive solution for packaging small quantities of packages. All you need to do is pull out a desired amount of tape, activate the tape with water, and seal the carton.

  • Automatic Machine: If you have a packaging machine that seals many packages per day, an automatic tape sealer may work better.

Step 3: Activate the Adhesive

Activation of water plays a key role in the activation of kraft paper tape, which changes its dry nature to a strong seal of a carton box.

It is important to apply the right amount of water because only this will allow the tape to stick effectively. The glue must be activated throughout the entire width of the tape.

A well-adjusted machine will ensure the application of enough water to activate the adhesive properties of the tape but not to make the paper completely wet. In case the adhesive is activated properly, the tape will become slightly sticky and ready for applying.

Don't use too little water to avoid non-activation of the adhesive. Too much water will lead to the formation of wrinkles.

Step 4: Apply Tape Along the Center Seam

Attach the activated tape right onto the middle seam such that it will cover both the top flaps uniformly. The tape must lay smooth on the box without any creases, bubbles, or folds. Proper alignment will ensure an even bond of the tape to the carton all through.

For optimal performance and increased holding power, ensure that the tape overlaps beyond both ends of the middle seam. An overall suggestion is that it should extend 50 to 75mm (2 to 3 inches) on both ends of the box. This will prevent the tape from being peeled off, while ensuring extra protection to the most stressed parts of the carton during transportation. Longer overlaps would work for heavy cartons.

Press the tape firmly all through once it has been properly aligned.

Step 5: Allow the Adhesive to Bond

The tape will make an initial bond within a few seconds after application, enabling the carton to proceed to the next steps of packaging. Do not adjust the position of the tape once it is applied since it may affect the effectiveness of sealing.

Curing of the adhesive tape is influenced by many elements, among which are the ambient temperature, moisture, and carton material used. In general circumstances, the adhesive tape achieves its maximum strength through the evaporation of the moisture contained in it. It is important to protect the cartons that were just sealed from excessive moisture and handling.

Step 6: Inspect the Seal

Adhesive tape must be smoothly attached to the whole length of the seam and should not peel off. When you can easily pull some parts of the tape, pay attention to the quality of water application, condition of the carton, and dispenser settings.

It is important to pay special attention to the edges of the tape – both leading and trailing. They bear the maximum load during transport, and they are also the first places where mistakes in application could be observed. The edges of the tape must be tightly adhered to the carton without curling or peeling.

What Is Kraft Paper Tape?

Water-Activated Kraft Paper Tape Explained

Kraft paper tape is a paper-based carton sealing material designed to create a permanent bond with corrugated cardboard. Unlike conventional plastic packing tape, it uses a water-activated starch adhesive that penetrates the paper fibers of the carton. Once the adhesive dries, the tape becomes part of the box itself, creating a stronger and more secure seal.

Why Use Kraft Paper Tape to Seal Cartons?

Stronger Bond Than Pressure-Sensitive Tape

Pressure-sensitive tape sticks only to the surface of the carton. The performance of pressure-sensitive tape deteriorates due to dust exposure and exposure to variations in temperature and moisture conditions.

The mechanism of operation of water-activated kraft paper tape is different in that once the adhesive is activated, it seeps into the fibers of the corrugated paper and creates an irreversible fiber-to-fiber bond. In this case, the tape is not on top of the carton but literally becomes a part of the carton itself.

Improved Tamper Evidence

Water-activated kraft paper tape has inherent tamper evidence properties as the tape cannot be easily detached once the adhesive has set. Trying to pull off the tape will cause tearing of the paper surface of the carton along with the tape.

Better Performance

Due to the strength of the bond between the water-activated kraft paper tape and the carton, the risks of peeling, splitting, or lifting of the tape are greatly reduced.

What You'll Need Before Sealing Cartons

Basically, you’ll need two things:

  1. Water-activated paper tape: If your business seals a small number of cartons each day, a manual water-activated paper tape can offer an efficient solution. However, automatic water-activated tape is ideal for medium and high-volume production.

  2. Correct carton size: Choosing a box that properly fits your product improves packaging strength, protects the contents during transit, and allows the tape to form a secure seal across the center seam.

When Should You Upgrade to an Automatic Kraft Paper Tape Carton Sealer?

  • Increasing shipping volume: The more orders that you receive each day, the slower your packaging will be because of manual sealing. An automatic sealer is what you need to increase throughput in your operations while providing reliable seals every time.

  • Inconsistent manual sealing quality: Various workers may place tape on the box with different water activation, pressure, or even alignment. Automation is what will guarantee you identical seals each time.

  • Rising labor costs: Automating your carton sealing process will help you decrease labor costs and enhance the productivity of your team.

  • Need for faster packaging lines: If manual sealing is holding you back, an automatic machine will be able to work as fast as the rest of your packaging equipment does.

  • Sustainability initiatives: Automatic sealers always apply the right amount of kraft paper tape and water to seal your boxes, thereby helping you use fewer materials and move away from plastic tape.

  • Higher-value products requiring stronger seals: To seal such valuable items as electronics, pharmaceuticals, industrial equipment, or exports, you should automate your packaging line.

Type of Water-activated Tape Carton Sealer

1. Manual Water-Activated Tape Dispensers

Manual dispensers are designed for businesses that package relatively small volumes of cartons each day. They activate the adhesive, dispense the required tape length, and help operators apply tape more consistently than manual cutting and wetting.

These machines are compact, easy to operate, and require minimal maintenance, making them suitable for warehouses, e-commerce businesses, retail fulfillment centers, and small manufacturing facilities.

FX-800 Desktop Manual Water-Activated Tape Dispenser

The FX-800 is a desktop manual dispenser that wets and dispenses kraft paper tape in a single operation.

It is well suited for businesses looking to improve sealing consistency without investing in a fully automated system. By delivering a controlled amount of water to the adhesive, the FX-800 helps produce reliable seals while reducing tape waste caused by uneven manual application.

2. Automatic Water-Activated Tape Carton Sealers

As production capacity increases, manual dispensing may no longer meet operational demands. Automatic carton sealers improve throughput by automatically folding carton flaps, activating the adhesive, and applying kraft paper tape with consistent pressure.

FXW-6050: For Cartons Requiring Manual Size Adjustment

The FXW-6050 is designed for production lines that package batches of cartons with the same dimensions or where carton size changes are made manually between production runs.

Prior to its use, the device will be set up to coincide with the needed carton specifications. Once it is set up, it will automatically fold the top flaps of the carton and seal them with water-activated kraft paper tape using water-activation and pressure sealing.

The FXW-6050 is best for companies that work with standardized carton sizes and in medium to high production facilities. Some of the advantages of this device include the following:

  • Uniform application of the tape on each carton

  • Consistent activation of the tape’s adhesive properties

  • Decreased need for manual labor for sealing

  • Increased speed and efficiency in sealing

  • Tamper-evident carton sealing

HCS-55AW: Automatic Adaptation for Random Carton Sizes

If your operation handles cartons of different dimensions throughout the day, manually adjusting the sealing machine between batches can reduce productivity. The HCS-55AWaddresses this challenge by automatically detecting and adapting to different carton sizes as they enter the machine. This capability makes it particularly suitable for:

  • Third-party logistics (3PL) providers

  • E-commerce fulfillment centers

  • Distribution warehouses

  • Contract packaging facilities

  • Manufacturers packaging multiple product lines

By eliminating frequent manual adjustments, the HCS-55AW helps maintain continuous production while reducing downtime and improving operational flexibility. Compared with fixed-size sealing systems, it allows you to process mixed carton sizes more efficiently without compromising seal quality.

Integrating Carton Forming and Kraft Paper Tape Sealing into One Packaging Line

However, while the output increases, simply optimizing carton sealing may not necessarily result in the most efficient solution. There have been cases when manufacturers found that it was more effective to automate the whole end-of-line packaging process from erecting the flat cartons to sealing them with water-activated kraft paper tape.

Instead of considering carton erection and sealing to be two different processes, you can incorporate them both into a single packaging line so that all cartons are erected and sealed properly before dispatching.

An automated packaging line with water-activated kraft paper tape includes several machines, each responsible for a particular process in the packing operation.

Automatic Carton Erector

The first step in the packaging process is to use an automatic carton erector, which receives flat cartons from the magazine, erects them, folds the bottom flaps, and seals the base of the carton using water-activated kraft paper tape.

This automation makes it possible to get rid of one of the most monotonous packaging jobs and ensure that all cartons are erected properly.

Product Loading Station

Having gone through the erection and sealing of the bottom side, the carton gets to the loading section.

Whether your manufacturing processes involve manual or automatic loading depends on how you want your packaging line to function. Appropriate carton formation facilitates the right placement of products and provides stability of the cartons during handling.

Automatic Top Flap Folding and Sealing

The carton then goes through the sealing portion of the packaging line. Prior to placing water-activated tape on the center seam, the top flaps will automatically get folded first. The end product is a tamper-evident seal without any problems regarding tape placement and adhesion consistency for all packages.

Conveyor System

There are conveyors that connect the different stages of the packaging process. It means that the cartons are conveyed continuously without having to manually lift and place them from one machine to another.

HCE-544WL Carton Erector: The Foundation of the Packaging Line

At the beginning of Hualian's fully automatic wet water-based adhesive carton sealing production line is the HCE-544WL carton erector.

This machine automates the entire carton forming process by:

  • Picking flat cartons from the storage magazine

  • Opening and squaring each carton automatically

  • Folding the bottom flaps

  • Applying water-activated kraft paper tape to seal the carton base

  • Transferring the erected carton directly to the packing station

Because every carton is formed consistently, the bottom seal achieves better contact with the corrugated surface, creating a stronger foundation before products are loaded.

Automating carton erection also helps reduce labor requirements, improve packaging consistency, and minimize errors caused by manually assembled cartons.

Conclusion

Water-activated kraft paper tape provides a stronger, more secure, and more sustainable way to seal cartons than traditional plastic packing tape. By following the correct sealing process and selecting the right equipment, you can improve package protection, reduce shipping damage, and create a more efficient packaging operation.

FAQs

Can kraft paper tape replace plastic packing tape?

The Kraft paper tape may effectively substitute the plastic packing tape used for packaging. In addition to reliable adhesion, the paper tape ensures ecological recycling and is also tamper-evident; however, it may be more expensive initially, and regular grades of the tape are unsuitable for wet environments.

Is water-activated tape waterproof?

The water-activated tape is not waterproof, but water-resistant. It is true that the starch adhesive used in this tape ensures permanent and fiber-fusing adhesion and is equally resistant to rain, humidity, and condensation. However, if it comes in contact with water, the adhesive weakens and the paper backing deteriorates.

How long does the adhesive take to dry?

The drying time for the adhesive varies between 10 and 30 seconds when it comes to super glue, and up to 24 hours for complete structural curing of wood or construction glues. It depends on the type of adhesive, the environmental temperature, and humidity.

Does kraft paper tape work on recycled cartons?

The truth is, kraft paper tape is great for recycled boxes. In fact, water-activated kraft paper tape provides even greater bonding strength for recycled paperboard boxes than regular plastic tapes because it bonds into the recycled paper material itself.
